Wedding bells rang for English teacher Casey McCabe last week as she prepared for her school wide anticipated wedding. The ceremony took place on Saturday, Nov 24. It was held at the Firestone building downtown known for it’s impeccable city view. The invite list consisted of 120 people from both sides of the families. McCabe’s first grade daughter, Georgia, was the maid of honor.
“She said she was way too old to be the flower girl, so I said she could be something bigger,” McCabe said.
McCabe’s fiance, Paul Engel, had an extravagant proposal plan. He was supposed to take her to New York City and walk the streets where her deceased mother grew up. The couple was to take a tour and visit her mother’s school. There, he would pop the question. But McCabe was skeptical of the the trip. She told him it would cost too much and that she wasn’t going. He was then forced to spill the beans.
“I felt terrible, I killed the great idea,” she said. “He ended up just asking me in a K.C. restaurant.”
Once the engagement was final, word of the pending wedding spread like wildfire. The news flooded the hallways and was a hot topic for weeks. McCabe said it was nice working at an all-girls school so she could talk about stuff like this with her students.
Just days before the wedding, McCabe was calm and cool but anxious for the break. McCabe said she wasn’t nervous and that everything was ready.
“I’m excited more than anything. I just hope everything with the iPod goes okay,” she said.
Most little girls don’t get to experience their mom’s wedding, but McCabe said Georgia was thrilled. Engel and McCabe have known each other five years, just enough time for Georgia to fall for him just as her mother did.
“She asked if she could call him ‘Papa’. She loves him, maybe even more than I do,” McCabe said with a chuckle.
Plans were made, invitations were sent, and vows were promised. The couple plans to take a trip to New York at Christmas for their honeymoon. Now that they’re married, the couple will finally get to see New York together.
