The Man, The Myth, The Legend

Looking out the window of a cozy vacation villa over a sprawling golf course in Palm Springs, CA, the glistening orange sun slowly drifted behind a mountain, and the warm desert resort cooled off.
As the sun set, men finished up games of golf and families scurried home from the pool to prepare for a night on the town. As the temperatures dropped outside, temperatures rose inside.
The Lally family congregated in the living room of their condominium to watch the Texas A&M/ Duke football game. Although avid Mizzou fans, the family relishes any competitive sporting event, especially a major competition like the Chick-fil-a Bowl.
While most of the time the family agrees on teams, they could be considered a house divided when it came to this game. And the reason the family was divided: the man, the myth, the legend, Johnny Manziel himself.
It seemed controversy constantly swirled around Manziel in his career at Texas A&M. From partying with the most famous celebrities, receiving Twitter shoutouts from LeBron James, to attempting to sell his own autograph – all amidst winning the Heisman Trophy – Manziel kept fans and haters alike entertained. But the real show was on the football field. The quarterback for Texas A&M, Manziel, nicknamed Johnny Football, always guaranteed riveting football games.
Manziel is not just another quarterback. He is filled with spunk, tenacity, and a large hunger to win. He is often seen scolding teammates on the sidelines and standing on benches to get the crowd more riled up. He is everything a football coach wants: hard working, dedicated, contains an insane playmaking ability and a will to win. But Manziel’s persona is exactly what divides so many people.
Some people love his gumption, while others find him arrogant. However, without his determination and grit on the football field, Manziel never would have led his team to such success. If he did not constantly provoke and hound his teammates, and the fans, Texas A&M would have been just another football team.
Manziel not only drew attention this past year because he was suspended one half of a game because he attempted to sell his autograph (which violates NCAA rules), but because there was speculation about whether or not he would declare for the NFL draft after this past college football season concluded.
On Jan. 8, Manziel officially declared he would enter the 2014 National Football League draft. Now even more attention surrounds Johnny Football. What team will choose him? What number overall pick will he be in the draft? Will he deliver as he did as quarterback for Texas A&M, or will he let his fans and new teammates down?
So many questions remain about the future of Manziel’s career. However, one fact is for certain, he will always be an interesting public figure to watch. Unpredictable to say the least, Manziel has a way of captivating some people, and turning others off.
While his team successfully defeated Duke, he left half of the Lally family who are charmed by him, delighted, and the other half of the family perturbed that the gutsy little quarterback had won yet again.
No matter what happens when his NFL destiny is decided May 8-10 Johnny Manziel will always captivate some hearts, and disgust others. Fans and haters alike will be tuned in to see where his future rests. Love him or hate him, there’s no denying, he’s an intriguing person that is rarity in the world of sports: the full package.
