People are lining up around the side of Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream to get a taste of their irresistible frozen treats. Established in Ohio in 1945 by Elizabeth Handel, this ice cream shop has a family-friendly atmosphere with an outdoor seating-only setup, an order-at-the-window system, and a wide assortment of ice cream types and flavors. With their brand-new Belton location at 1015 East North Avenue that opened mid-September, this shop is the new go-to place to grab an ice-cold dessert.
A small dish of ice cream costs $4.49, with their medium dish priced at just a dollar more. However, this is a little pricey compared to the prices at Andy’s Frozen Custard. Andy’s medium dish is the same price as a small dish at Handel’s! But it is worth it, depending on the flavor you choose, which can be hard because each location has an array of 48 flavors that change daily. A popular Handel’s order is the Four Scoop Sampler, which is where the costumer selects four flavors to try in a dish. This is a good way to get a taste of the shop’s wide selection.
The “Vanilla Caramel Brownie” is creamy, soft ice cream scattered with chewy bites of brownie that hug your molars in the best way. Nevertheless, the Vanilla Caramel Brownie is lacking in the caramel department. Searching for caramel was like looking for the homework your dog ate. But what made up for the mind-boggling lack of caramel was the chunks of your Grandma’s homemade brownies. The first bite pulls you in like a mouse to cheese.
The “Mint Chocolate Chip with Chocolate Chips” wasn’t the most riveting experience. If someone is on the line about mint flavor in general, they shouldn’t go for this ice cream. The mint was the type one would find at a crunchy mom’s house. Nonetheless, the chocolate chunks will make any chocolate lover happy. But overall, this flavor is exclusively for die-hard peppermint fans.
The “Cinnamon Roll” was absolutely disgusting. If someone can digest more than one bite of that “ice cream,” they have an impeccable palate. It tastes like a rich Greek yogurt with gooey cinnamon substance slopped on it. One bite and it triggers fight-or-flight instincts. There are no words to describe this sad excuse for ice cream. Well, other than a waste of freezer-space.
Handel’s likes to spice up their menu with creative and funky names, like “Graham Canyon”, “Chocoholic Chunk”, “Sticky Fingers”, and “Ooohh… Dough!” flavor, which is a collaboration of classic cookie dough and typical cookies and cream. And it tastes just like it sounds. Imagine wedges of soft Oreo cookies surrounded by smooth ice cream with lumps of cookie dough dispersed throughout.
Overall, Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream has some mouthwatering frozen desserts, but it all comes down to the flavor the customer chooses. And when there are so many different menu items to try, like sundaes, “Hurricanes,” shakes and “Handel Pops,” it can be hard to decide what to order. As for actual ice cream flavors, some leave the consumer feeling satisfied, while others might result in them regretting their purchase. It’s like a teeter-totter at a playground, where one side is feeling less than satisfied while the other is enjoying some really delicious ice cream. So, if nothing else, know your ice cream preferences before placing an order at Handel’s.
