The Real Chiefs of the City

The agony of defeat is all Kansas City felt for many years. For 44 years, to be exact, all Kansas City felt was failure. So many Sundays people would don their brightest red and yellow in naive hope that just maybe their Chiefs could pull out a victory.
The Chief’s 2012-2013 season was one of the worst in NFL history: a perfect storm. The Chiefs went 2-14 and lost a teammate to suicide. It seemed nothing more could go wrong. Fans, nonetheless proudly wore their team’s color in support.
The 2013-2014 season began, and even though fans had every reason to forget about their hometown football team after a disastrous season the previous year, they didn’t. After an average preseason, fans still held out hope for a successful season.
A successful season is exactly what they received.
The first game of the season, the Chiefs came out of the gates with a vengeance, new coach and quarterback in toe. The Chiefs decisively defeated Coach Andy Reid’s former team, The Philadelphia Eagles. After the initial victory, fans were thrilled. Tweets were sent commenting on the fact they were already halfway to their previous season’s number of wins. But the triumph did not end after game one. Game after game, the chiefs came, and the chiefs conquered.
In mid-October Sion 2010 alumna Katie Lally, took a trip to Rally House on the Plaza with intentions of purchasing new Chiefs gear. It was clear hundreds of Kansas Citians had the same idea. Fans were growing excited. Rally House was packed, and almost every customer in line could be seen holding flaming red apparel. There was no doubt Kansas City was getting fired up over this red-hot football team.
Between new Chiefs gear and renewed hope, Kansas City Chiefs fans are ready for the season to continue. As the Chiefs stand at 9-0, they prepare to take on the Denver Broncos this Sunday Nov. 17 at the Mile High City. However, what if the Chiefs lose?
No matter what the outcome of the game is on Sunday, one fact is for sure, Kansas City Chiefs fans will always stand by their team. Chief fans are the real deal. They are not bandwagon fans; they have been there for their team through the good, the bad, and the ugly.
Season after season fans stayed true. Instead of moping around when their team was a losing team, they chose to instead start movements and slogans like “save our chiefs” in an attempt to do all they could to help their team.
This season, fans have truly come out to show support. At the Oct. 13 game vs. the Oakland Raiders, Arrowhead became the “loudest stadium” in the Guinness Book of World Records. If that does not prove the fans’ love for their team, it is questionable what could.
The men in red work hard on and off the field to be the best football players possible. They are the ones responsible for all the excitement in this city. In all honesty though, the real Chiefs of Kansas City are the fans. It takes intense loyalty and love to remain so incredibly true to a team that was so incredibly bad. However, they are the best team in the NFL now, and the fans are beginning to receive what they have so desperately wanted for so many years. No matter what happens the rest of the season, one thing is for certain, Chiefs fans are here to stay. Nothing could break the love Kansas City has for their team; the love they have for their Chiefs.
