Fine Arts Day Showcases Many Talents Despite Attendance
Fine Arts Day is a highly anticipated day marked on the calendar of Sion events every year. It’s a tradition that many students look forward to every year. It’s an opportunity for students to show off their talents in the arts, and it allows for students not necessarily in fine arts classes to display their talents as well. Fine Arts Day is an important tradition for Sion. That’s why it’s so upsetting to see so many girls skip this event each year.
It is worth noting, however, that this year’s Fine Arts Day did seem to have a higher attendance than in past years. At least the bleachers were relatively full. That doesn’t excuse the people that don’t come to school or leave early just because they feel like Fine Arts Day is a worthless day.
Fine Arts Day is an important day for the arts department at Sion, which often times can take a backseat to athletics. It allows people in the Sion community to showcase their talents to the rest of the school, through many different mediums.
Fine Arts Day allows people to view the artwork from the multitude of art classes offered at Sion. This year, they even included a gallery inside of a room decorated with chalk drawings of all Sion students.
The beauty of Fine Arts Day is that it’s open to all students at Sion, not just those involved in fine arts classes or clubs. This year especially, there was an increased emphasis on multimedia arts, whether from Spanish and French classes or from classes like The Siren.
Fine Arts Day isn’t just something that’s sloppily thrown together, either. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication from teachers like Jennifer Campbell, Elizabeth Mulkey and Penne Selle (along with all of the art teachers). All of the performers put in hours every day to perfect their performances, like the recitation that seniors Kelly Lowndes and Maura Healy performed at the end, but sadly the gym had cleared out as soon as the clock struck 3:10 p.m.
Fine Arts Day is a day for students in the Sion Community to showcase their artistic talents. Some are students that don’t normally have their talents showcased at all-school Masses or have their artwork hanging outside of the art rooms. Some of the performers to showcase their talents, but they are looking for another outlet.
Many people put in hours every day to perfect their performances and make the day a success, but, unfortunately, many people don’t appreciate this event the way they should. By leaving early, they miss out on amazing performances like Lowndes and Healy’s recitation that they spent days perfecting or the videos that students in Spanish and French classes spent so many hours editing. Those who left weren’t able to witness the talents of their Sion sisters that they never would have seen otherwise.
