Night of One Acts Implements Changes
This year’s Night of One Acts, performed on Oct. 7 in the gym, was different from previous years in terms of content and timeline.
The feeling in the air was different this year as veteran Night of One Acts performers walked from their cars to prepare for the show. Instead of a warm spring breeze surrounding them, they were welcomed with crisp fall air. The Night of One Acts, a student led and created production featuring short plays, poetry and improv, was shifted to the fall this year from its usual position in the spring.
“It’s been in May typically and that is just such a stressful time of year. It was so much fun still, but really stressful with AP tests, the FAB banquet and graduation,” senior and Night of One Acts director Natalie Williams said. “So moving it to the fall was really to relieve some of the stress on students so that they could really make it a fun performance, which is what it’s supposed to be.”
The production included three student-written short plays, a few improv scenes prompted by suggestions from the audience and three poetry recitations – a new addition for this year. Members of the Slam Poetry Club, juniors Joileeah Worley and Khamedriah Grimes and sophomore Tempest Malone contributed to these recitations with poems that they wrote themselves.
“I was really happy to have the poetry girls. That was something new, we’ve never done that for One Acts before and Joileeah was a great help at getting all of that together,” Williams said. “There’s so [much] talent in girls at Sion that have so much to say and I’m glad that we were able to give them a platform to speak and share their voice through their poems.”
With three performers this year, Slam Poetry Club hopes to contribute even more to next year’s Night of One Acts.
“The poetry club would have liked to be more involved but most of them already had plans that Friday night,” Worley said. “Next year we will be anticipating the Night of One Acts and hopefully everyone will be involved.”
